I have a hobby website which purpose is to help Synology NAS users to set up their home servers. I have had it for a year and of course I use Google Analytics to understand and improve the user experience for my readers.
I have had the suspicion that mobile traffic was an issue by looking at the Device Category data.
Here is the data for one month:
As you can see 171 visitors in one month is not a lot, but unfortunately I assumed that my readers mostly work on desktops and therefore most of the visits would originate there.
When Google Analytics released the new benchmarking report, I compared my data with other sites in my segments and it really confirmed that I had a problem with my mobile traffic:
My stats were -95.04% !! That is really significant.
The first thought: this was a design issue. That site was not responsive on mobiles and therefore my users did not return to the site. I immediately bought a new theme and set it up that same night. Now it was only a matter of waiting to see if that made a difference.
I didn’t have to wait long, the day after the change my mobile users increased from an average of 45 to 100 and that increase in traffic has been kept for almost a month now.
Looking at the Mobile Reports, here is the result of the design change: (I made an annotation on when the change was made):
If this trend continues, I will gain 50 more sessions/day which translates into 1500 sessions a month.
I still have some work to do, but the results are impressive. here is the data from the benchmarking report after the change:
Now your turn,
how are you doing compared to your competition? Make sure you check your benchmarking report, it will help you grow your site and give your visitors a better experience.
