Google wants to deliver the best and most relevant content to their customers when they do an online search. So, if you have the best products, services or content, Google wants to know about them.
You want your site to appear high in their rankings so your customers can find you.
Google has created a tool called Webmasters Tool that can help achieve both goals.
But who can better explain it than Google themselves?
This is a short list of the reports you can get with Google Webmaster:
- Search Queries or Keywords,
- Who is linking to your site
- Is your site has been crawled by Google Bots
- Crawl erros (pages not found) and many more.
Here are the steps to configure your Google Webmaster account and to link it with Google Analytics.
Set up Google Webmaster Tools
Login Google Analytics and click on “Admin”, select the property and then click on “Property Settings”:
Scroll down to Webmaster Tool Settings and click on “Edit”:
It will warn you that you will be redirected to Google’s Webmaster application, click “ok”:
Login with your Gmail account:
When you have logged in, click on “Add Site”:
You will now be asked to add your site’s URL:
Verify that you own the website
Normally, it will ask you to verify your site directly, but if it doesn’t, click on your site:
and then click on “Verification details” on the upper right hand corner:
Next, you need to verify that you own the site:
There are different methods for doing this. Because you are using Google Analytics, I will show you how to verify it with Google Analytics:
- Click on Alternate method
- Click on Google Analytics
- And verify.
And you will then receive a message letting you know that your site has been verified. Click on “Continue”:
And you will be redirected to Webmaster Tools homepage:
Link your Webmaster Tools account with your Google Analytics Account
No matter which method you use, make sure that you associate your webmaster account with your Google Analytics account.
When you associate a Google Analytics web property with a Webmaster Tools site, you will be able to see Webmaster Tools data in your Google Analytics reports.
To do that, go to your Webmaster Tools Home Page and click on “ Manage site” and “Google Analytics Property”:
You will be asked to Enable webmaster Tools in Google Analytics. Click on “Add a site to Webmaster Tools”:
Now, click on the site you want to link and click “Save”:
Now that you have done that, go back to Google Analytics and check that your webmaster Tools account has been recoginzed. You have the possibiliy to select for which views the data will be collected. We have removed the Test and Raw Views as that data is not relevant for the reports.
Review the Webmaster Tools Report in Google Analytics
Please note that it might take a couple of days before data starts appearing in Google Analytics!.
To view the reports, click on Reporting:
Click again on “Acquisition” and then click on “Search Engine Optimization” and “Queries:
And you will have access to some of the data that webmaster tools collect for you:
