A Session ends after a specific amount of time passes and by default, in Google Analytics, it is 30 min.
Which settings should I have for my site?
The length of a session will vary depending on your business and the content you have on your site.
- For example, if your site has a lot of videos with an average length of 20 min, you should change your session settings to at least 35-40 min so the user can pause and rewind the videos and still keep the same session when browsing another page.
- If your page content is not extremely long, you can decrease the session length to 20 min.
Important! Session duration is not a reliable metric and should be used with caution.
Let’s go through how to change the session duration for your site:
How to change the session duration
Log in Google analytics: http://www.google.com/analytics
Click on “Admin”:
From the “Property” column, click on “Tracking Info” and then “Session settings”:
This configuration will modify your data permanently, so I recommend you to test the setting in your “Test View” first before you apply it to your “report view”.
Change the settings according to the content of your site and click “Apply”.
Google sets 30 minutes as default for the session settings. Note that sessions cannot be less than 1 minute or greater than 4 hours
And finally, Google Analytics saves all the configurations you make on your account like goals, segments and the like in the “Change History” section, but I really recommend you to make an Annotation so you have fast access to this change when you need it.
